A description of where the number sits against its thresholds. It is not an entry or exit signal.
Indicator limit
Its complexity makes the signal harder to interpret.
Read it with
Average Directional Index: fewer false divergences, but it is still an oscillator, so read it when ADX is below 25.
Answers: Has the move stretched?
What it actually does
The Ultimate Oscillator combines three time windows in one indicator (7, 14 and 28 by convention) with stepped weights. It tries to fix the oldest flaw of oscillators: relying on one window makes them either fast and noisy or slow and late.
Why it was designed this way
False divergences plagued single-window oscillators. An extreme reading on a short window can be perfectly normal on a longer one. Combining three horizons makes the extreme agreed upon across three measures instead of resting on one.
How it is read in practice
The two thresholds are 70 and 30. Its strongest signal is confirmed divergence: price makes a lower low while the indicator makes a higher low, with the indicator staying above 30, then breaking above the divergence peak. Requiring all three conditions cuts the number of signals sharply and raises their quality.
Hypothetical example
A stock makes two lower lows in two weeks while the oscillator makes a higher low both times: selling is losing strength even though price says the opposite. The later break above the period's high confirms a reversal that started in the structure before it showed in price.
Where it errs and why
Its complexity costs transparency: three weighted windows mean the reader cannot easily tell which horizon is driving the reading. It is also less common, so fewer tools support it, and it does not replace classifying the market environment.
Read it with
Read it with trend strength, as with other oscillators; with volume when confirming divergence; and with structural levels, since a divergence that forms at a dense wall carries more weight.
Where to see it on the platform
The technical chart shows it among the composite oscillators, for anyone who wants a multi-horizon reading in a single line.
Its three weights
The default weights give the short window four times the weight of the long one and the medium window twice as much. That keeps the indicator quick to respond while it holds a longer memory. You can change the weights, but that voids the published conventions for its thresholds, so anyone who changes them must re-derive the thresholds from the asset's history instead of copying them. General rule: do not alter the parameters of a composite indicator until a test shows the default setting fails on that specific asset.
