The short answer
- What is the Stochastic Fast indicator (Stochastic Fast)?
- Stochastic Fast: the same formula without smoothing.
- When does Stochastic Fast get it wrong?
- High noise. Rarely used alone. See its current reading on platform symbols, at the last daily close, in the "Reading now" table on this page. See current reading →

High noise. Rarely used alone.
Read it with
Exponential moving average: its noise eases when it is read only in the direction of EMA-21.
Answers: Has the move stretched?
What it actually does
The Fast Stochastic is the raw version before final smoothing: the position-in-range line (%K) as is, with no extra smoothing, plus its short average as a signal line. The common "slow" version adds a third smoothing layer that makes both lines calmer.
Fast or slow: the trade-off
The fast version catches a turn a session or two before the slow one, and in short-term trading that gap is the whole trade. The price is twice the false signals or more: every wobble inside the range moves it. The trade-off is settled by horizon: fast for minutes and hours, slow for days.
How it is read in practice
Like its sibling: thresholds at 80 and 20, and a crossover of its two lines inside the extreme zones is its strongest signal. It needs a regime gate even more than its sibling does. Using it in a strong trend with no filter is a recipe for a slow bleed.
Hypothetical example
A session trader hunts index bounces inside the day's range: the fast version gives the crossover at the low half an hour before the slow one. In a two-hour move, half an hour is a third of the opportunity. On a clean trend day the fast version gives four counter-trend signals, all of them losers.
Where it errs and why
The noisiest of the family after the Relative Strength Index derivative, and not suited to anything but short timeframes or use without a gate. It is highly sensitive to gaps and outlier candles.
Read it with
It is not read alone. The environment is classified with the trend strength indicator, confirmed with volume, and placed on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in open space.

Calibration
Its two common windows are five and three (against fourteen and three for the slow version), and the short first window is the secret of its speed, not just the missing smoothing. Minute-level traders shorten it further, down to three and one, and the line becomes nearly a shadow of price: maximum speed and maximum noise together. That only works with a strict regime gate and an automatic exit that does not negotiate.
