Read it exactly like MACD. Its value is that changing the average type slows the signal or speeds it up, depending on the asset.
The short answer
- What is the Extended MACD indicator (MACD (Extended))?
- Extended MACD: MACD with selectable averages (exponential, simple or weighted) instead of the fixed exponential.
- When is MACD (Extended) wrong?
- Freedom to tune invites fitting the past (overfitting): settings that shine on one stretch of history and fail after it. See its current reading on the platform's symbols, at the latest daily close, in the 'Reading now' table on this page. See its reading now →

Answers: is momentum changing?
What it actually does
The extended version of moving average convergence divergence lets you choose the type of each of its three averages, not just the window: you can make the fast one exponential, the slow one weighted and the signal line simple. The original fixes all three as exponential.
Why the types get changed
Because each type has its own character: exponential is fast, simple is smooth and triangular is smoother still. Anyone who wants fewer, cleaner signals makes the slow average smooth and keeps the fast one exponential. Anyone who wants a faster response does the reverse. Here the flexibility is a calibration tool for the asset, not decoration.
When it is worth the effort
When testing shows the default setting fails on a given asset for an understandable reason, such as an asset that moves in gaps, where simple smoothing on the slow average suits better than exponential. Without that understandable reason, flexibility is a door to fitting the past, not to improving the future.
Hypothetical example
An asset that often opens with gaps: the default version gives nine signals in a quarter, half of them false. Making the slow average simple cuts that to five signals with higher accuracy. The improvement has a structural reason and is not just number-fitting.
Where it errs and why
Its biggest risk is fitting the past: many parameters let you find a combination that looks excellent on history and collapses on the future. The rule: change a parameter only for a reason you can state in one sentence.
Read it with
Don't read it alone. First classify the environment with the trend strength indicator to learn whether trend tools or range tools fit. Then confirm with volume, which separates supported moves from empty ones. Then place it on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in an empty price zone. This three-step order cuts the worst signals before they cost you anything.
