Stochastic RSI

Stochastic RSI

The more sensitive of the two. It catches extremes inside extremes.

The short answer

What is the Stochastic RSI (Stochastic RSI)?
Stochastic RSI: the Stochastic applied to RSI, not to price.
When is Stochastic RSI wrong?
It hits both extremes often. A signal without context is worth nothing. Its current reading on the platform's symbols, at the latest daily close, is in the "Current reading" table on this page. See its current reading →

A worked example: the indicator is calculated with its formula on one hypothetical path (rise, then sideways, then decline), not on real stock prices.

What it actually does

The Stochastic RSI applies the oscillator formula to the RSI readings themselves, not to price: where today's reading sits between the lowest and highest reading in the window. It is a derivative of a derivative, so it is far more sensitive than either one.

Why it exists

Because the RSI can sit between 40 and 60 for months without touching a threshold, its signals vanish in quiet markets. This indicator rescales its readings to their recent range, so it produces signals even when the underlying does not reach an extreme. The price of that is noise.

How it is read in practice

Its thresholds are 0.8 and 0.2 (or 80 and 20). Because it is very jumpy, a careful reading waits for the exit from the extreme zone, not the entry into it: a cross back above 0.2 after time spent below is more reliable than simply reaching it.

Hypothetical example

A quiet stock whose RSI swings between 45 and 58 for a full month · without a single signal. The oscillator derived from it gives 6 full cycles between its extremes over the same period: 4 are useful within the range, and 2 are false during two breakout attempts.

Where it errs and why

The noisiest oscillator of them all. Being a derivative of a derivative, it doubles the sensitivity and, with it, the false signals. It is not suited to entries on its own in any timeframe.

Read it with

Read it with its underlying (the raw RSI) so a relative extreme is not mistaken for a real one, with trend strength as a gate, and with volume as confirmation.

Where to see it on the platform

The technical chart can show it as an option below price, next to its underlying, so you can compare the two readings in one view.
