±50 usual extreme limits.
The short answer
- What is the Chande Momentum Oscillator (CMO)?
- Chande Momentum Oscillator: the gap between total gains and total losses, divided by their sum.
- When does CMO get it wrong?
- Similar to RSI, and it shares the same weakness in strong trends. Its current reading on the platform's symbols, at the latest daily close, is in the "Current reading" table on this page. See its current reading →

Answers: Has the move stretched?
What it actually does
The Chande Momentum Oscillator compares the sum of gains on up days with the sum of losses on down days. It then divides the gap by the total, giving a reading between -100 and +100. The idea is close to the Relative Strength Index, but the math makes it faster and blunter.
The practical difference from RSI
RSI smooths with internal exponential averages, so its reading comes out muted. This one uses raw sums, so it reaches an extreme faster and returns from it faster. Zero is a clear balance point here: positive means gains dominate the window, negative means losses do · a cleaner reading than the 50 line on its sibling.
How it is read in practice
The two thresholds are +50 and -50 for overbought and oversold. Its sharpness makes it good at catching early divergences: it makes clearer highs and lows than smoothed oscillators, so its split from price is easier to spot before the split shows up in slower indicators.
Hypothetical example
A stock makes two close highs. RSI shows them as nearly equal because of its smoothing, while the Chande oscillator shows the second clearly lower · the same divergence, but the more candid tool caught it a week earlier.
Where it errs and why
Its sharpness is the flip side: more noise and more false signals in volatile assets. Treat it like other oscillators in strong trends · sticking to one extreme is strength, not a chance to sell.
Read it with
It is not read alone. First classify the environment with the trend strength indicator. Then confirm with volume, which separates a backed move from an empty one. Then place it on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in open space.
