S&P 500 index options

SPX

Index options on S&P 500: European-style, cash-settled, no Assignment, very liquid, better tax treatment.

What these contracts are

S&P 500 index options (SPX) are options on the index itself, not on a fund that tracks it. It is the largest index options market in the world and the main institutional tool for hedging and income. One point is worth ten times a point on the popular exchange-traded fund.

What sets them apart structurally

Pure cash settlement (no shares change hands, the index is not delivered), European style (no early exercise, so no assignment surprises mid-life), and favorable US tax treatment for broad-based index contracts. These three make it the favorite for complex structures and systematic income.

SPX or the ETF?

The tracking fund's contracts are smaller (good for small accounts), American-style and deliver shares. SPX suits large sizes and structures that worry about early assignment. Liquidity in both is among the deepest anywhere. The choice is about size and structure, not quality.

Hypothetical example

A systematic seller of monthly iron condors sleeps easy on SPX: no early assignment to break up the legs before expiry, and settlement is plain cash. The same trade on the ETF can wake up to an assigned leg and shares nobody asked for, the evening before a dividend.

Common mistake

Forgetting the morning settlement: traditional monthly SPX contracts stop trading on Thursday and settle on a price computed from Friday's opening prints (SET). The overnight gap wiped out the profits of many holders who thought their position was effectively closed.

The settlement price trap

Some index contracts settle on a price computed from the opening prints on the morning of expiry, not on the prior day's close. The gap between the two has surprised generations: a position that looked profitable in the evening lost money at the morning price. Read the contract specification before the first trade, not after the first surprise.

Where to see it on the platform
