Gamma Exposure

GEX (Gamma Exposure)

A measure of how gamma affects dealer activity. It tells you the levels where mechanical buying or selling pressure may appear.

Some sources also spell the Arabic term with a different letter. The meaning is the same.

What it measures

Gamma Exposure (Gamma Exposure · GEX) adds up the gamma of all open interest on an asset or market into one number: how many dollars market makers must trade to hedge each 1% move. It is a map of the hidden mechanical force that pulls prices or pushes them without any news.

Reading its signal

Positive: market makers sell into rallies and buy dips, and their hedging absorbs the move, so the market tends to compress around pinning levels. Negative: their hedging chases the move in its own direction and amplifies it, so volatility feeds on itself. That means sharp swings both up and down.

Why it is a pillar of the platform

Because it explains days that seem to have “no reason”: a crash that accelerates without news (negative gamma), or a market pinned ahead of expirations (heavily positive). Read together with its walls and its flip point, it frames the day before the open. Which regime of movement are we in?

Hypothetical example

An index with deeply negative total gamma on the morning of sensitive data: any surprise will be amplified mechanically. Hedgers sell into drops and buy into rallies, chasing the market. A risk manager cuts size ahead of time, not after the blowup.

Common mistake

Read it for behavior, not direction: GEX does not say “it will rise or fall”. It says how a move will behave if one starts. It acts as an amplifier or a shock absorber, and direction comes from elsewhere.

Why it is not read as direction

It does not say “it will rise or fall”. It says how a move will behave if one starts: an amplifier or a shock absorber. Direction comes from elsewhere: the macro picture, flows and levels. Mixing the two is the most common mistake in reading options structure.

Where to see it on the platform

The Gamma dashboard calculates it live for each covered symbol, and the indicator bar at the top of the pages shows its total with a line of its last few days.
