Optimism that moves money into growing cyclical sectors as the economy strengthens. Also called: RISK-ON. Finviro's term: “Risk-On”.
What the position means
Risk-On describes a single psychological and liquidity regime: confidence is high enough and liquidity is available, so money moves toward assets with higher risk and higher return. That means growth stocks, small caps, emerging markets and cryptocurrencies, while havens are abandoned.
Its measured footprint
Broad rising breadth, small caps beating large caps and growth beating defensives, credit spreads tightening, a softer dollar with havens being sold, and volatility shrinking. The fingerprint is a full chorus. One player does not make a regime.
Why it is diagnosed, not guessed
Strategies live and die by it: chasing breakouts works in Risk-On and gets slaughtered in Risk-Off, and defensives are the reverse. Diagnosing the regime before choosing the tool is half the decision, and the half that is most often skipped.
Hypothetical example
Weeks in which the small-cap index outperforms the large-cap one, credit spreads tighten, and everything risky rises: a clear Risk-On regime. In it, buying strength has statistically worked better than waiting for pullbacks that never come.
Common mistake
Mixing up the regime with a green day: a rising session inside a Risk-Off regime is usually a bounce that gets sold, not a regime reversal. A regime is measured by the whole chorus and over weeks, not by the color of one candle.
How it is measured, not how it feels
Risk-On is not a mood but a measured fingerprint: risky assets rise and havens fall, credit spreads tighten, implied volatility recedes, and participation widens. Agreement among three of the four is more reliable than a headline saying “the market is optimistic”.
Where to see it on the platform
The Macro Confluence model issues the regime verdict (Risk-On, Risk-Off or neutral), kept current on the macro map and in the header of member pages.
The market regime panel issues the verdict with its visible components, so you see the evidence and not just the summary.
