Risk-Off

Risk-Off

Fear moves money into stable defensive sectors (staples, utilities, healthcare). Finviro's term: “Risk-Off”.

What the position means

Risk-Off is a collective contraction in appetite. Money retreats from risky assets into safe ones (Treasuries, the dollar, havens), leverage is unwound, and preserving capital becomes everyone's first goal. It is a defensive mode in which survival is measured, not winnings.

Its measured footprint

Broad falling breadth, defensives and quality leading, credit spreads widening (the most honest witness), a stronger dollar and a bid for havens, volatility waking up and its term structure tightening. Broken supports in this regime tend to continue lower rather than bounce.

The harshness of its rules

In sharp Risk-Off, correlations converge toward 1: good assets are sold along with bad ones to raise liquidity, and selectivity fails for a while however sound it is. So the tools are cash and structure (smaller size, hedging, patience), not stock-picking heroics.

Hypothetical example

Two weeks in which the high-yield credit spread widens by 100 basis points while the dollar and volatility jump together: the regime has announced itself. Those who cut exposure and hedged early bought later at lows made by those who were slow to read the whole picture.

Common mistake

Buying “cheap” in the middle of a Risk-Off phase with ordinary-day logic: cheap gets cheaper in a falling regime. Real bargain hunting starts with regime-reversal fingerprints, not with the first discount.

Its measured fingerprint

Havens rise and risky assets fall, credit spreads widen, implied volatility jumps, and the dollar strengthens. When three of the four agree, the reading is a verdict, not an impression. When they diverge, what is happening is sector rotation, not a flight from risk.

Where to see it on the platform

The regime verdict in the macro map is stated openly, and its components (spreads, breadth, volatility structure) are shown so you can see how it formed.

The market regime panel issues the verdict with its components, and the correlation matrix shows whether the flight is broad or selective.
