Reading VIX, the volatility term structure and VVIX together instead of a single number, to tell real calm from hedged calm. Sometimes mislabeled as 3D volatility analysis; the platform's term is Advanced Volatility Structure.
What this structure is
Advanced Volatility Structure (Advanced Volatility Structure) is a way of reading the volatility market in all three dimensions at once: term (near versus far, contango or inversion), strike (the volatility skew between puts and calls) and the volatility of volatility itself (VVIX). A three-dimensional surface says what a single VIX number cannot.
Why it goes beyond a single number
VIX at 18 can hide two opposite structures: a calm, upward-sloping term structure with a normal skew (healthy), or an inverted one with an extreme skew and feverish volatility of volatility (suppressed stress). The first is a relaxed environment and the second is a waiting room before a storm. The single number is the same in both.
Its main signals
An inverted term structure (near term more expensive) is the surest fingerprint of acute stress. A sudden flattening of the skew says hedging demand has evaporated (dangerous complacency) or that call buying has become the chase. A jump in VVIX before VIX is a recurring early warning.
Hypothetical example
A quiet week on the indexes: VIX sits at 14, but its ratio to the 3-month level climbs toward parity and VVIX jumps from 80 to 105. The surface is tightening under a calm headline number. A mismatch like this has historically come before more volatility episodes than it has followed.
Common mistake
Staying fixed on a single number: anyone who reads only VIX gets surprised by what the surface has been showing for days. The structure is a map and the number is one point on it.
What it adds beyond simple volatility
It reads volatility in all three dimensions together: its level (historical rank), its slope across strikes and its structure across terms. When the three agree, they give a verdict that none gives alone. Low volatility with a steep skew and an inverted structure is compressed tension, not calm.
Where to see it on the platform
The volatility structure panel shows all three dimensions with their verdicts, and the indicator bar sums up the term dimension live next to VIX.
Volatility tools show all three dimensions in one view, with a combined verdict.
