Flow and institutions

Institutional Flow

Institutional Flow

Money from banks and hedge funds, moving in sizes that change the price, unlike retail trading. Finviro's term: “Institutional Flow”.

What it means

Institutional flow (Institutional Flow) is the movement of money from large funds: asset managers, pensions and hedge funds, which move sectors and not just single stocks. Its size makes their entry and exit a matter of weeks, leaving measurable traces for those who know where to look.

Its readable traces

In volume: days of distribution and accumulation recur at above-normal sizes. In options: premiums in the millions and multi-leg structures. In disclosures: quarterly 13F filings reveal positions in hindsight. And in money rotating between sectors, where their collective preference shows before prices fully reflect it.

Why follow it, not copy it

Their horizon is not yours: a pension fund building a five-year position can sit through a drop a personal account can't. Following them shows which way the wind blows. Sailing is still by your own rules.

Hypothetical example

A sector sees three weeks of high volume with strong closes, and the next 13F filings show three large funds increased their holdings in it. The story is complete: flow measured live found its official quarterly signature.

Common mistake

Reading 13F as the present moment. The filing comes out well after the quarter, and the position may already be closed. It is a tool for understanding patterns, not a late entry signal.

How to tell it from ordinary heavy volume

Not all heavy volume is institutional. An institution splits its order to hide its intent, so its footprint is an extended pattern, not a single candle: accumulation at one level over several days, or a high share of execution on undisclosed venues. A single giant candle is usually news or an index fund rebalancing.

Where to see it on the platform

The institutional positioning page shows 13F filings and comparisons, flow tools catch their live footprints, and the sector map shows their collective direction.

The symbol card shows the share of undisclosed trading, and the flow module reads the quarterly disclosures.
