It separates the trend component from the cycle.
The short answer
- What is the Hilbert trendline (HT Trendline)?
- Hilbert trendline: an instantaneous trendline from the Hilbert transform.
- When is HT Trendline wrong?
- Heavy math, and its interpretation is not intuitive. See its current reading on the platform's symbols, at the latest daily close, in the "Reading now" table on this page. See its reading now →

Average trend indicator: separates trend from cycle, and ADX measures how strong that trend is.
Answers: does the market have a trend? Is it moving in a cycle?
What it actually does
The Hilbert trendline builds an adaptive average that sets its window to the dominant cycle length measured from the data itself. The transform estimates the current cycle length instantly, then builds a smooth line over exactly that length. The window breathes with the market's rhythm.
The idea from the signal-processing school
The school sees price as a signal made of trend, cycles and noise, and borrows its separation tools from communications engineering. This line is the "trend component" after the cycles are isolated: what remains when the repeating wave is subtracted from the move.
How it is read in practice
As a smooth average: where price sits relative to it, and its slope. Its advantage is that the smoothness is not bought with a fixed lag but with an adaptive one: in short, fast cycles its lag shortens automatically, and in long ones it lengthens, so it stays an average of the right speed without any intervention.
Hypothetical example
An asset moves from fast weekly swings to slow monthly waves. A fixed-window average is too fast in the first phase and too slow in the second, while the Hilbert line resets itself for both phases and stays useful in each.
Where it errs and why
It assumes a measurable cycle, and markets driven by sudden events break that assumption. Its calculation is complex and opaque, so odd behavior is hard to diagnose, and platform support is thinner than for the traditional tools.
Read it with
It is not read alone. The environment is classified with the trend strength indicator, confirmed with volume, and placed on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in open space.
Where to see it on the platform
The technical chart in the members area shows it in its full family on any symbol and timeframe you choose.
Assumption limits
Before relying on it, test the cyclical assumption on the asset itself. Compare its crossovers with the record of actual turns over a past year. If the relationship holds, the asset is cyclical and deserves the whole family. If not, the traditional tools are more honest despite their simplicity. Major index assets and seasonal commodities are closer to cyclical regularity than news-driven and tech stocks.
