Spot Trading

Actually buying and owning the asset, with no leverage or borrowing ⇐ no forced liquidation however far the price falls. Sometimes mislabeled as spot only; the platform's term is Spot Trading.

What it means

Spot trading (Spot Trading) means buying or selling the asset itself with immediate delivery. You pay the price and you own the thing, a stock or a cryptocurrency, with no expiry, no later obligation and no built-in leverage. It is the simplest and oldest form of trading, and everything else is derived from it.

Compared with derivatives

Spot: real ownership, no expiry to chase, a worst case of the asset going to zero, and almost no cost of waiting. Derivatives: leverage, expiry, Theta and margin limits. They give more ways to shape a position in exchange for added complexity and structural risk. Each has its place, and mixing them up without noticing is the danger.

In cryptocurrencies especially

The distinction matters. Spot means you really own the coin, while the popular perpetual contracts are leveraged positions with continuous funding that get force-liquidated in storms. Most of the wipeouts among new traders happened in perpetuals, not spot. The two names are sometimes mixed up on purpose.

Hypothetical example

Spot buy of $1,000 of a coin: it fell 40%, so your wallet is worth $600 and you are still an owner who can wait as long as you like. The same position at 10x leverage would have been force-liquidated at the first 10%. The difference is not the forecast. It is the structure of the instrument.

Common mistake

Spot is often dismissed as slow. Yet quiet compounding on a rising asset has beaten most leveraged gambles over the years, because survival is the condition for compounding, and spot positions do not get liquidated.

What sets it apart structurally

No built-in leverage, no expiry, no decay. The worst case is that the asset itself falls, not that a contract dies with the right idea and the wrong timing. That is why it is the floor of a long-horizon portfolio, with derivatives on top as a layer of tactics and hedging, not a replacement.

Where to see it on the platform

The crypto scanner covers the spot market, and the derivatives tools state plainly that they are derivatives, so the distinction holds on every screen.

The symbol card and price tools read the spot market, and the Gamma dashboards measure when the derivative shadow leads its movement.
