Buying and selling the asset itself, with no leverage and no futures. Sometimes mislabeled as spot; the platform's term is Spot Trading.
What this trading is
Spot trading (Spot) is the exchange of the asset itself with immediate delivery: you pay the price and you own the thing, whether a stock, a currency or a digital asset. It is the original market from which every other market is derived, and the name comes from it: the price of the 'spot' you are standing on right now, not the price of a later date.
Spot and derivatives: root and shadow
Everything else is a contract on its price: futures price the spot plus the cost of carry, and options price the odds of its paths. So spot is the reference the shadows are measured against. But the tail can wag the dog: in heavy derivatives seasons (expirations, heavy dealer hedging) shadow flows drive the underlying itself. That is the whole phenomenon behind gamma analysis.
What sets it apart for traders
No built-in leverage, no expiry, no decay. The worst case in spot holding is that the asset itself falls, not that a contract dies with the right idea and the wrong timing. That is why it is the floor of a long-horizon portfolio, with derivatives on top as a layer of tactics and hedging, not a replacement.
Hypothetical example
One investor holds spot shares. A trader holds two-month call options. The stock goes sideways, then jumps in month four. The spot holder collects the whole jump. The option expired two months earlier, right about the idea and wrong about the timing. The difference was not the view. It was the structure of the instrument.
Common mistake
Carrying spot instincts into derivatives without translating them: “the stock will rise” is enough in spot. With options you need three more answers: when, how large, and how much you will pay for time and volatility. Most disappointments for people moving from stocks to options come from this gap.
Where to see it on the platform
The ticker card and the price tools read the spot market, and the gamma boards measure when the derivatives shadow leads its movement.
