A rise that forces short sellers to buy, which pushes the rise further.
What this squeeze is
A Short Squeeze (Short Squeeze) is an upward blowup fueled by the short sellers themselves. They sold a stock they did not own, betting it would fall, and it rose. Every rise inflates their open-ended loss until they are forced to buy to get out, which pushes the price up on everyone after them. The most aggressive buyer in the market is the losing trader running for the exit.
Its measured fuel
Short-interest ratio (how much of the float is sold short; above 20% is flammable ground) · Days to cover (short interest over average daily volume: how many days everyone needs to get out; above 5 is a narrow door) · and borrowing cost: when it is expensive it squeezes shorts even without a move. All three together are a powder keg waiting for a spark.
Its life cycle
A spark (news, a breakout) ⇐ a first wave of covering ⇐ upward gaps that trap the rest ⇐ a capitulation peak on frantic volume ⇐ then a vacuum: the forced buyers ran out, and the price is held up only by latecomers who bought the top. The second half of the story (the pullback) is almost as certain as the first.
Hypothetical example
A stock with short interest of 24% and days to cover of 6 jumps 12% on ordinary news. The next two days add another +30% with no further news, which is pure chain covering. Then within two weeks it gives back half the move: whoever bought 'momentum' at the peak funded the exit of the last lucky short.
Common mistake
Holding the squeeze bet after its fuel is gone: the sign of the end is a collapse in the short-interest ratio in the updates. When the fuel is gone, what remains is an excited move with no legs, and squeeze profits are made in its heart, not its tail.
Its measured fuel
Three things read together: short interest as a share of the float, days to cover (short interest over average volume), and the borrowing cost that squeezes shorts even without a move. All three together are a powder keg waiting for a spark, and when one is missing the expected 'squeeze' is just excitement with no legs.
Where to see it on the platform
The momentum scanner shows short-interest ratios and days to cover, and flags when they coincide with breakouts and unusual volume.
