Chance of a sharp move, with no set direction. Finviro's term: “Squeeze Potential”.
What this surge is
A Squeeze (Squeeze) is a violent, accelerating move fueled by forcing a cornered side to trade against its will: short sellers forced to buy to cut swollen losses, or hedgers forced to chase the market. The move feeds on the pain of the trapped, not on the conviction of buyers.
Its two conditions
A trapped crowd: positions piled in one direction (high short interest, heavy hedging), and a spark that breaks their pain level. News or a breakout turns all their positions to losses at once. Then every position that closes becomes fuel for a move that traps the next one, a self-feeding chain reaction.
Its signature
Speed out of proportion to the news: a small spark starts a huge fire because the fuel was already stacked up. Volume rises with consecutive price gaps and pullbacks fail to hold. Then comes a sharp end as the trapped run out: the last forced buyer exits and demand drops out from under the price.
Hypothetical example
A stock with 28% of its float sold short breaks resistance on modest news. The move that “should” have been 3% became 40% in two days. Every short who bought to get out pushed the price up on the next one. The stock then gave back half the move the following week, because no forced buyer was left.
Common mistake
Chasing the Squeeze at its peak: a forced move ends when the trapped run out, not when it reaches a “fair value”. Whoever enters late buys from the last short to close, only to find they are now the new trapped crowd.
How you know it is over
It ends when the trapped run out, not when price reaches fair value: short interest collapses in the updates, the upward gaps stop, and a frantic volume peak is followed by an empty bid. Whoever bought momentum at the peak funded the exit of the last lucky short seller.

The momentum scanner flags high short interest combined with a breakout and volume, and the Gamma dashboard shows hedging squeezes (negative gamma).
