The fastest to react in the moving average family.
The short answer
- What is the triple exponential average (TEMA)?
- Triple exponential average: three exponential layers that cancel each other's lag.
- When does TEMA get it wrong?
- The most prone to noise. Not suited to entries on its own. Its current reading on the platform's symbols, at the latest daily close, is in the "Current reading" table on this page. See its current reading →

Answers: does the market have a trend?
What it actually does
The triple exponential average extends the double's logic by a third layer: three exponential averages in a row, combined by a formula that removes more lag. The result is the fastest line in the moving average family. It nearly hugs price in strong trends.
The price of top speed
Every layer that removes lag adds sensitivity: this indicator reacts to noise that the rest of the family ignores entirely. That is why it is not suited to entries on its own in any timeframe. Use it as a fast trend filter or a trailing line for stops, not as a signal generator.
Where it actually helps
On short timeframes, for someone trading inside the session who wants a line that follows price without a lag that costs half the move. And for trailing a stop behind a fast move, where hugging price matters more than smoothing.
Hypothetical example
A session where an index jumps and then settles: the triple average hugs the jump from its first minutes while the simple one stays far away for half the session. In a choppy session with no trend, the triple average gives seven false crosses where the simple one gives none.
Where it errs and why
The noisiest in the whole family. Its triple structure makes it overshoot price at turns, so it draws signals that run ahead of the move and are then abandoned.
Read it with
Don't read it alone. First classify the environment with the trend strength indicator to learn whether trend tools or range tools fit. Then confirm with volume, which separates supported moves from empty ones. Then place it on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in an empty price zone. This three-step order cuts the worst signals before they cost you anything.
Where to see it on the platform
The technical chart in the members area draws it on any symbol and timeframe you choose, and the scanner terminal shows its reading in the symbol card with the rest of its family.
