Above zero the uptrend leads, below it the downtrend leads · and distance from zero shows the strength of the trend, not its direction.
The short answer
- What is the Aroon Oscillator (Aroon Oscillator)?
- Aroon Oscillator: the difference of Aroon-Up minus Aroon-Down, so it ranges between -100 and +100.
- When does the Aroon Oscillator get it wrong?
- Near zero it swings and gives conflicting signals. Read it with ADX, not alone. Its current reading on platform symbols, at the last daily close, is in the "Reading now" table on this page. Reading now →

Answers: does the market have a trend?
What it actually does
The Aroon Oscillator folds the original indicator's two lines into one: the highs line minus the lows line, swinging between -100 and +100. A positive reading means highs are more recent than lows (an upward tilt), and a negative reading means the opposite.
Why the shortcut helps
Because it turns two lines into one number you can sort and compare across dozens of symbols in a single table. That makes it an ideal filter in scanners: ranking the market by its reading separates symbols that keep renewing their highs from those that have stalled.
How it is read in practice
A zero cross signals a shift in the tilt of new highs versus new lows. An extreme near +100 means a pure uptrend (all highs are recent and there are no new lows). A reading near zero means balance, a market with no clear time-based trend.
Hypothetical example
A scanner ranks forty symbols by the oscillator reading: six above +70, four below -70, and the rest near zero. The map is instant. Ten symbols are actually trending and thirty are chopping, so your time goes to the ten.
Where it errs and why
It inherits its parent's flaw: it measures recency, not size, so it can give an extreme reading for a tiny move as long as that move keeps renewing its highs. Read it with a measure of size such as rate of change, not alone.
Read it with
Don't read it alone. First classify the environment with the trend strength indicator to learn whether trend tools or range tools fit. Then confirm with volume, which separates supported moves from empty ones. Then place it on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in an empty price zone. This three-step order cuts the worst signals before they cost you anything.
Where to see it on the platform
The technical chart in the members area draws it on any symbol and timeframe you choose, and the scanner terminal shows its reading in the symbol card with the rest of its family.
