Answers: Does the market have a trend? Is momentum shifting?
What it actually does
Aroon measures time, not price: how many sessions have passed since the last high in the window, and how many since the last low. It turns them into two lines between zero and 100. The logic: in a healthy uptrend, highs keep renewing, so the highs line stays high.
How it is read in practice
The highs line above 70 with the lows line below 30 means an established uptrend, and the reverse for a downtrend. A cross of the two lines points to a possible turn. When both lines fall together, the market has made no new high or low for a while, which means it is in a sideways range.
What sets it apart from the rest of the family
That it does not read the size of a move but its recency. This lets it catch a trend slowing from an angle momentum indicators do not see. A trend that keeps rising but has not made a new high in twelve sessions is something Aroon tells you right away, while momentum is still positive.
Hypothetical example
A stock has been rising for two months. Its highs line stays above 80 the whole time, then drops to 50 in a week with no notable decline in price. The reading: new highs have stopped. The trend is aging even though it has not broken.
Where it errs and why
Because it measures time only, a high that is one cent higher resets its counter just like a high that is ten percent higher. In ranges it gives repeated, meaningless signals when highs and lows alternate quickly.
Read it with
Don't read it alone. First classify the environment with the trend strength indicator to learn whether trend tools or range tools fit. Then confirm with volume, which separates supported moves from empty ones. Then place it on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in an empty price zone. This three-step order cuts the worst signals before they cost you anything.
