The short answer

What is the ADX Rated indicator (ADXR)?
ADX Rated: the average of ADX now and n candles ago.
When does ADXR get it wrong?
Doubled lag. Its current reading on platform symbols, at the latest daily close, is in the “Reading now” table on this page. Reading now →

A worked example: the indicator is calculated with its formula on one hypothetical path (rise, then sideways, then decline), not on real stock prices. Orange marks where it goes wrong.

Answers: does the market have a trend?

What it actually does

The ADX rating averages today's trend-strength reading with its reading some time ago (14 sessions by convention): an extra smoothing layer on an already smoothed indicator. The goal is a heavier, slower line that classifies major trends without jitter.

Why a layer on top of a layer

Because trend strength itself oscillates in long trends. It rises and falls with every corrective wave, so the reader takes it for the end of the trend when it is a pause. The average absorbs these swings and stays high as long as the larger trend holds. It is a regime classifier with long breath.

How it is read in practice

Like its source, with slightly lower thresholds because of the smoothing: above 20 is an established large trend, and below it is a range environment. Systematic traders use it as a filter for slow strategies: a monthly trend-following system runs when the average is above its threshold and is switched off below it.

Hypothetical example

An uptrend runs six months with three sharp pullbacks. Trend strength drops below 20 in each pullback and suggests the trend is over three false times, while the rated average stays above the threshold the whole six months. One correct reading against three false alarms.

Where it errs and why

Its doubled slowness means doubled lag at the true end of a trend. It stays high for weeks after the actual break. It is a classification tool for slow regimes only.

Read it with

It is not read alone. The environment is classified with the trend strength indicator, confirmed with volume, and placed on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in open space.

Where to see it on the platform

The technical chart in the members area shows it in its full family on any symbol and timeframe you choose.

Its two windows

It has two windows: the source's window (fourteen by convention) and the offset period the present is averaged with (also fourteen). A longer offset adds both weight and lag, so it suits monthly and quarterly regimes. The practical rule: the longer the horizon of the strategy it gates, the longer its offset should be. A daily gate on a quarterly regime switches it on and off for nothing with every wave.
