Take part of the profit and keep the rest with a stop (Stop) at breakeven. It cuts risk and keeps the opportunity open.
What this close is
A partial close (Partial Close) is selling part of a position and keeping the rest: picking some of the fruit and leaving the tree productive. A management tool that turns the sharp all-or-nothing decision into a range of flexible choices.
Its three uses
Securing the trip: selling half at 2R makes the worst case for the rest a breakeven · so your mind is free to ride the trend. It also reduces risk before a binary event (earnings) without leaving the story. And it takes liquidity for a better setup that has appeared · from a position that is still valid.
Its measured psychological effect
The hardest moment in trading is holding a winner while it briefly breathes against you: someone who has locked in a part can tolerate the breathing with calm nerves, while someone holding everything often sells the temporary low. A partial close buys patience with realized profit · and patience in trends is the source of the big gains.
Hypothetical example
Three hundred shares at $50 with a stop at $47: at $56 (2R) one hundred are sold and the stop moves to breakeven, at $62 a second hundred go and the stop trails behind the last one · the trend finished at $71, so the position exited at three prices: none of them the top, and together a plan that made money without heroics.
Common mistake
Cutting the winner early and keeping the loser whole so it can “recover” · the exact opposite of logic: pruning what grows and watering what wilts. A partial close is the tool for a planned winner; the loser has other, stricter tools.
Why it is among the most important management decisions
It settles the tension between taking profit and letting a winner run. Closing half the position at the first target locks in real profit, and the other half stays open with a stop at breakeven. The trade can no longer lose money, whatever happens next. That turns discipline from an emotional call into a rule written in advance.
