The sum of the delta of all your positions: it tells you your net directional exposure. Zero means neutral (delta neutral).
What this total is
Delta net position (Net Delta) is the signed sum of the deltas of everything in a portfolio or structure. Each share counts 1 delta, and each contract counts its own delta, positive or negative. The one number that results answers a simple question: how many "share equivalents" am I actually holding?
Why it works as an exposure compass
Many positions make the math easy to lose track of, and the total cuts through it. A net delta of +240 means you effectively hold 240 shares, however complicated the combination. It measures your real directional dose and sets your hedge: how much delta do I need to take off?
Quick calculation
For each contract: delta × 100 × number of contracts (positive for bought calls and sold puts, negative for the opposite), plus shares as they are. A "complex" five-leg structure can end up with a net delta near zero, meaning no directional view at all.
Hypothetical example
Two hundred shares (+200), two long puts with a delta of −0.45 each (−90), and one short call with a delta of 0.30 (−30): the net is +80. The portfolio looks loaded with instruments, yet it behaves like a quiet eighty shares.
Common mistake
Calculate it once and it goes stale. Deltas move with price and time (gamma and charm), so the net changes on its own. A portfolio neutralized in the morning can be exposed by evening without a single trade.
How it is used in hedging
The number translates straight into action: a net delta of +200 means selling 200 shares (or buying puts with the same combined delta) brings the portfolio back to directional neutral. That is why market makers use it as a live counter, not a periodic gauge. Every price move changes it, so they rebalance.
Where to see it on the platform
The calculator shows the delta of every leg in the structure, and the trading journal adds up your positions, so you see the whole exposure and not its pieces.
The calculator shows the delta of every leg in the structure, and the trading journal adds up your positions, so total exposure reads as one number.
