A position a market maker aims for to stay neutral on direction, earning from IV and time rather than from the move.
What this neutrality is
Delta Neutral (Delta Neutral) is a position whose net Delta is roughly zero: it neither gains nor loses from small stock moves in either direction. It does not mean having no view. It moves the bet from "where is the price going?" to other dimensions: volatility, time and curvature.
Who lives in it
Market makers by necessity: they buy and sell with the public and neutralize their Delta right away by hedging. Their profit comes from the spread and Gamma, not from direction. Volatility sellers and buyers by choice: a long straddle that is Delta neutral profits from a big move in either direction.
Hypothetical example
A long straddle at the money (net Delta ~0): the stock jumps 3% and the Delta becomes +0.24. The trader sells a quarter-unit of equivalent shares to return to neutral and locks in the curvature profit. Repeating this as price swings is the harvest of Gamma (Gamma Scalping).
Common mistake
Assuming neutral means safe: a Delta-neutral position can be badly exposed to volatility (Vega) or to time (Theta). You switched off one dimension out of four, and the rest are still live.
Neutrality that keeps evaporating
Neutrality is momentary by nature: the first move shifts the Deltas (Gamma) and the position tilts. Staying neutral takes regular rebalancing. The cost of rebalancing against the gains of the original bet is the whole economics of this way of trading.
The first price move shifts the Deltas (Gamma), and a position that was neutral starts to lean. Keeping it neutral means rebalancing regularly, and that costs spread and commissions. Weighing that cost against the gain from the original bet is the craft of those who live on neutrality.

The calculator shows the net Delta of any structure you build, and the gamma dashboard explains how neutral hedgers behave, which moves the market itself.
