Delta Exposure

DEX (Delta Exposure)

The amount of the asset market makers must buy or sell to neutralize their positions.

What it measures

Delta Exposure (DEX · Delta Exposure) adds up the Delta of all open interest on an asset into one number: how many equivalent shares the options market as a whole carries. In other words, the accumulated directional bias in the contract books, offset by an opposite hedge in the dealers' books.

What it adds on top of GEX

GEX says how hedges accelerate with price moves (curvature), and DEX says how large the hedge already in place is (slope). A huge Delta Exposure means a mountain of stock hedges that depend on the contracts staying alive. Any event that kills them (an expiration, a volatility collapse) unwinds the mountain as flow into the market.

How to read it in practice

Its changes say more than its level: a jump in positive DEX means new call bets piling up (and hedge buying that pushes price). Its collapse after expirations explains the "vanishing support" that follows big expiration Fridays. The structure that held the price up died with its contracts.

Hypothetical example

A stock whose positive DEX swelled two weeks before a monthly expiration (call fever): part of its rise was dealers buying hedges. The expiration passed, the contracts died and their hedges were sold. The stock fell 4% in two days "with no news". The news was in the contract calendar, not in the company.

Common mistake

Reading it as a raw directional forecast: positive DEX does not mean "it will rise". It means a rising hedge structure is in place, and its meaning lies more in how fragile it is and when it dies than in its direction.

What it adds on top of Gamma Exposure

Gamma says how hedges accelerate with price moves, and this says how large the hedge already in place is. Its value lies in how fragile the structure is and when it expires: a big expiration kills contracts and their hedges get sold, which explains a drop with no news after an expiration Friday.
