The Shooting Star is a single-candle bearish reversal at the top of an uptrend. It has a small red or green body at the bottom, a long upper shadow (2x the body or more), and almost no lower shadow. It appears at the top, which sets it apart from the Inverted Hammer that appears at the bottom.

The upper shadow shows the bulls pushed prices up but sellers drove them back
Trading psychology
The power struggle between buyers and sellers
In an uptrend, the bulls push price sharply higher during the session. Then sellers overpower them and bring price back near the open. The long upper tail is the "shooting star," a failed attempt higher. The rejection at the top is a clear distribution signal at elevated levels.
Outlook and confirmation
Entry conditions and expected price move
Needs confirmation in the next session
Works best at key resistance, Fibonacci levels, or RSI divergence. Expect -3-7% over 5-10 days. A bearish confirmation in the next session raises confidence noticeably.
Ideal setting for the pattern

How it is traded in practice
A shooting star at the top of a long advance: buyers pushed price higher, were rejected hard, and the session closed near its low. Selling (or taking profit) comes after a later close below the star's body, with the stop above the high of its shadow, because that rejected high is the hypothesis. It is stronger at visible resistance or a big round number, and on high volume, which shows the rejection happened with real participation and not in a vacuum.
Common mistake
Selling every upper shadow in a rising market. A strong trend draws many upper shadows and then swallows them. A serious Shooting Star needs a long advance before it, resistance at its level, and confirmation after it, and all three together are rare. Betting on the top with a large position over a single candle forgets that a single-candle pattern is the weakest family of candles to prove.
