How to identify the pattern

Step-by-step checks
  • Open and close at or near the session low
  • Long upper shadow (2× the average candle range or more)
  • No lower shadow or a very small one. That is the definition
  • Appears after an uptrend or at clear resistance
  • Body color does not matter: the shadow structure is the signal

Trading psychology

The power struggle between buyers and sellers
At the open, the bulls push price up hard (the upper shadow shows how far they got). By the end of the session the sellers take over completely and bring price back near the open. It is a dramatic failed attempt by the bulls and a loud warning that bullish momentum has collapsed and sellers are in control.

How it is traded in practice

The Gravestone is a doji with one long upper shadow: open and close level at the bottom of the range after a failed push higher. At the top of a rally it is one of the clearest rejection messages. Buyers reached their limit and were sent back to zero. After a later bearish confirmation, a trader might exit or sell with a stop above the top of the shadow, since that rejected peak is the limit of the thesis.

Common mistake

It trades in mid-range: a Gravestone with no extended rally before it is just an ordinary choppy session. It is also confused with the shooting star. The difference is that the shooting star has a small body and the Gravestone almost none, and the second carries more weight because sellers pushed back the attack down to the last cent. Like any single-candle pattern, without confirmation it is a possibility, not a decision.
