Bullish Harami, or Pregnant Woman

Bullish Harami

The Bullish Harami is a two-candle pattern: a large bearish candle followed by a small bullish candle whose whole body sits inside the body of the first. "Harami" is Japanese for "pregnant": the small candle inside the big one is like a baby in its mother's womb.

How to identify the pattern

Step-by-step checks
  • Appears at the bottom of a downtrend
  • Candle 1: a large bearish candle (the mother)
  • Candle 2: its whole body sits inside the body of candle 1 (the shadows may extend outside it)
  • The smaller candle 2 is, the stronger the pattern; ideally ≤25% of the size of candle 1
  • Treat it as a warning, not a trade trigger. Confirmation is needed

Trading psychology

The power struggle between buyers and sellers
After a strong selling session, the next day's range collapses. Sellers couldn't push much lower and buyers closed slightly higher. This pause inside the previous candle's range points to hesitation and possible trend exhaustion. It is a pause, not a reversal, and confirmation is necessary.

Outlook and confirmation

Needs confirmation in the next session
53% on its own: the weakest of the two-candle reversals. Wait for a third bullish candle that closes above the Harami high before entering. See "Bullish Three Inside Up" for the confirmed version.

How it is traded in practice

The Bullish Harami is a contraction after a storm: a large red candle in an extended decline, then a small green candle whose whole body sits inside the first candle's body. The containment says the heavy selling suddenly stopped, the first calm after a slide. It is the weakest of its family, so confirmation is mandatory: a third close above the small candle's high is the green light, the stop goes below the large candle's low, and the target is modest, at the first resistance.

Common mistake

Entering on the small candle itself: containment is a pause, not a reversal, and half of these cases resume the drop after the rest. The third candle is the decider. Also avoid confusing a true harami (body inside body) with a small candle whose shadows stay outside the range: being strict about containment protects the pattern's record.
