Finer control over how fast the stop accelerates.
The short answer
- What is the Parabolic SAR Extended indicator (Parabolic SAR Extended)?
- Parabolic SAR Extended: a parabolic stop with separate parameters for up and down moves.
- When does Parabolic SAR Extended get it wrong?
- More parameters = more chances of overfitting. See its current reading on platform symbols, at the last daily close, in the "Reading now" table on this page. See current reading →

Answers: Where should the stop go?
What it actually does
The extended version of the parabolic SAR exposes every hidden parameter of the original: the starting acceleration, its step, and its cap, separately for each direction, with an optional offset at reversal. The original fixes them all at one set of defaults.
Why splitting the two directions makes sense
Because markets do not move symmetrically: drops are faster and sharper than rallies in most stock markets. A stop that creeps at the same speed in both directions is either too slow in a drop, which gives profits back, or too fast in a rally, which exits early. The extended version allows faster acceleration for short positions.
When customizing pays off
When a test on the asset itself shows that the default settings always exit too early (a very noisy asset needs slower acceleration) or always too late (a smooth-trending asset can take faster acceleration). Customizing is a response to measurement, not a hobby.
Hypothetical example
A trader works on a calm index fund and a stormy tech stock: the default settings shake them out of the stormy stock at the first burst of noise and lag in the calm fund. Two custom versions with different accelerations solve what a single setting cannot.
Where it errs and why
Every extra parameter is a door to fitting the past: a setup that is perfect on last year can fail on the next. And it inherits the fatal flaw of the original: repeated reversals in sideways markets.
Read it with
It is not read alone. First classify the environment with the trend strength indicator. Then confirm with volume, which separates a backed move from an empty one. Then place it on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in open space.
