A worked example that explains the rule, not a stock price. The circle marks the first close beyond the level. The blue line is the target. The orange line is the invalidation. Prices are in the right-hand column, and sessions sit under the volume bar. Hollow green candles closed above their open, and filled red candles closed below it.

What it is

Three tops at one level. The more often price is rejected at one price, the more weight the level carries · and the more traders wait for it to break.

When the trigger starts and when it fails

Signal

A close below the support line joining the two lows.

Invalidation · Structural Invalidation

A close above the third high.

Reading it stage by stage

  1. The three highs Three rejections at one price. Each repeat adds weight to the level and more traders waiting for it to break.
  2. Support line The two lows draw a flat floor.
  3. Breakdown A close below it. ⚠ Stop orders are piled up there, so a false breakdown is more likely here than with a double top.

Recognition rules

  • Three highs of similar height separated by two lows.
  • The two lows sit close together and form a flat support line.
  • Volume shrinks across the three highs.
  • Confirmation is a close below the support line joining the two lows.

Measuring the target

The height of the pattern (the high minus support) is subtracted from the breakdown point.

Where it fools you

  • A level tested three times is visible to everyone, so stop orders pile up beneath it. That makes a false breakdown more likely here than with a double top, not less.
