A worked example that explains the rule, not a stock price. The circle marks the first close beyond the level. The blue line is the target. The orange line is the invalidation. Prices are in the right-hand column, and sessions sit under the volume bar. Hollow green candles closed above their open, and filled red candles closed below it.

What it is

A gradual shift from decline to rise that draws a bowl-shaped arc. No sharp turning point · a slow change of ownership from a desperate seller to a patient buyer.

When the trigger starts and when it fails

Signal

A close above the left rim of the bowl.

Invalidation · Structural Invalidation

A close below the last low before the breakout.

Reading it stage by stage

  1. Falling half Selling gradually loses force. Volume is high, then fades.
  2. Bottom Lowest volume in the pattern. No eager seller or buyer, just ownership changing hands quietly.
  3. Rising half Volume returns with price, and the arc completes.
  4. Breakout Price moves past the left rim. ⚠ Clear only in hindsight. While it forms, it looks like dull stagnation.

Recognition rules

  • A smooth curve with no sharp highs or lows.
  • Volume draws the same arc: high at the start, lowest at the bottom, then rising again.
  • A long duration · months, not weeks.
  • A breakout above the left rim of the bowl is the confirmation.

Measuring the target

The depth of the bowl is added to the rim level.

Where it fools you

  • It is only clear in hindsight. While it forms it looks like dull stagnation, and most people who call it a "rounding bottom" do so after the breakout has passed.

We do not detect chart patterns with a numeric rule: telling them apart takes judgment on the chart. Candlestick patterns with a numeric rule are detected daily by the candlestick pattern scanner.

The mirror image: the rounding top

The same pattern turned upside down, with the same rules in the opposite direction: what was a top becomes a bottom, and the trigger, target and invalidation all flip direction.
