A worked example that explains the rule, not a stock price. The circle marks the first close beyond the level. The blue line is the target. The orange line is the invalidation. Prices are in the right-hand column, and sessions sit under the volume bar. Hollow green candles closed above their open, and filled red candles closed below it.

What it is

A flat, steady floor with highs sloping down toward it. One buyer defends a single price, and the seller accepts less on every attempt.

When the trigger starts and when it fails

Signal

A close below the horizontal support.

Invalidation · Structural Invalidation

A close above the last lower high.

Reading it stage by stage

  1. Horizontal support A buyer defends a single price.
  2. Lower highs The seller accepts less on every attempt.
  3. Breakdown A close below support. ⚠ In a broadly rising market, this pattern breaks upward more often than expected: the bigger trend beats the geometry of the smaller one.

Recognition rules

  • Horizontal support touched at least twice.
  • A falling resistance line touches a series of lower highs.
  • Volume shrinks inside the pattern.
  • Confirmation is a close below the horizontal support.

Measuring the target

The height of the triangle's base is subtracted from the support level.

Where it fools you

  • In a broadly rising market, this pattern breaks upward more often than expected. The bigger trend beats the geometry of the smaller shape · a rule that applies to all chart patterns.

We do not detect chart patterns with a numeric rule: telling them apart takes judgment on the chart. Candlestick patterns with a numeric rule are detected daily by the candlestick pattern scanner.
