A worked example that explains the rule, not a stock price. The circle marks the first close beyond the level. The blue line is the target. The orange line is the invalidation. Prices are in the right-hand column, and sessions sit under the volume bar. Hollow green candles closed above their open, and filled red candles closed below it.

What it is

A flat, steady ceiling with lows rising toward it. A seller sells at one fixed price, and a buyer is willing to pay more each time · and the equation ends in favor of whoever raises their price.

When the trigger starts and when it fails

Signal

A close above horizontal resistance on high volume.

Invalidation · Structural Invalidation

A close below the last rising low.

Reading it stage by stage

  1. Horizontal resistance A seller selling at one fixed price, touched at least twice.
  2. Higher lows Buyers pay more each time · the contest ends in favor of whoever raises their price.
  3. Breakout Best before two-thirds of the triangle's length · reaching the apex without a breakout drains its force.

Recognition rules

  • Horizontal resistance touched at least twice.
  • A rising support line touching successive higher lows.
  • The gap narrows as price nears the apex.
  • Volume shrinks, then jumps at the breakout.
  • The breakout is best when it happens before two-thirds of the triangle's length.

Measuring the target

The height of the triangle's base is added to the resistance level.

Where it fools you

  • If price reaches the triangle's apex without a breakout, the pattern loses its force · the energy was spent waiting. A breakout without volume often falls back below resistance within a few sessions.
