Percentile

Percentile

Where the current reading sits among the readings of the period. Sometimes mislabeled as the centile; the platform's term is Percentile.

What this rank is

The percentile (Percentile) places today's value inside its historical distribution. A percentile of 90 means the reading is higher than 90% of its peers in the measured window. It is a universal calibration tool: it turns any bare number into a position that means something. Is this a lot or a little by this measure's own standard?

Why the platform uses it everywhere

Because raw numbers cannot be compared across assets or across time. An implied volatility of 30% is expensive for an index and cheap for an emerging stock, and a "huge" trading volume in 2020 is ordinary in 2026. The percentile drops the scale and keeps the position. That gives every indicator one language: 95 means "historically extreme" whatever is being measured.

Reading it with maturity

The extremes (above 90 · below 10) are where the meaning is. Historically extreme values either return to the middle (a bet on reversion) or announce a new regime (the distribution itself breaks). Telling them apart is the decision, so the percentile shows where the question is, not its answer. The window is part of the verdict: a one-year percentile differs from a ten-year one.

Hypothetical example

The volatility risk premium at its 94th percentile on a three-year window: selling insurance is rarely this generous. It is a historically strong environment for premium-collecting strategies, with the question that must follow: is there a visible event that justifies the extreme? If there is, the generosity is pay for real risk, not a gift.

Common mistake

Treating a high percentile as an automatic trigger: "above 90, so I sell" ignores that an extreme can get more extreme for a long time (percentiles stick to the edges in new regimes). It is an attention filter that calls for analysis, not a substitute for it.

Where to see it on the platform

Most platform indicators show their value with its historical percentile next to the raw number. Position and value together.
