Near-term is pricier than far-term, a sign of stress. Finviro's term: “Backwardation”.
What this inversion is
Backwardation (Backwardation) is a downward-sloping futures curve: the near expiry costs more than the far one, the opposite of the normal state (contango). In commodities it means sharp immediate scarcity (everyone wants the barrel today, not in two months). In volatility contracts it means acute, immediate panic.
Why it is a heavy signal
Because nobody pays a premium for the present unless forced to: an inverted volatility curve says fear of this week outweighs fear of everything after it. It marks a crisis in progress, not general worry. Historically, sharp inversions coincide with panic peaks and the lows of major markets, not their beginnings.
How to read it in practice
The moment of inversion is a storm warning for a storm already under way, not a buy timing on its own. And the return of contango after a deep inversion is one of the cleanest measured signs that a crisis is easing: dealers are again more afraid of tomorrow than today, and that is nature recovering its health. Read the two phases together, not separately.
Hypothetical example
A crisis hits the market and the volatility curve inverts deeply: the first month at 34 and the third at 26. Two weeks later the gap starts to narrow, then contango returns. Half of the recovery signal was in place before the headlines improved. Derivatives structure led the press, as it usually does.
Common mistake
Buying the bottom just because the curve inverted. Backwardation says "panic now", not "panic is over", and it can deepen for weeks. The actionable signal is the shift from backwardation to contango, not backwardation itself.

Where to see it on the platform
Volatility tools show the state of the structure explicitly and date its shifts, and the environment panel feeds it into the regime reading.
