A zero cross shows when the accumulation balance changed.
The short answer
- What is the Chaikin Oscillator (Chaikin A/D Oscillator)?
- Chaikin Oscillator: the difference between two exponential averages of the accumulation line.

Simple moving average: its cross of zero is more believable when the slope of DMA-20. agrees.
Answers: is momentum changing? · Does volume back it?
What it actually does
The Chaikin oscillator measures the momentum of the accumulation/distribution line: the gap between a fast EMA (3 sessions) and a slow one (10) of that line. Just as MACD measures price momentum, this measures the momentum of money flow · is accumulation speeding up or fading?
Why a derivative of a derivative helps here
Because the accumulation line turns slowly by construction. It can keep rising for days after the flow has really started to weaken. The oscillator catches the weakness as soon as it starts. A drop below zero says the last three days' flow has become weaker than the last ten's, even if the line itself is still rising.
How it is read in practice
A cross of zero is its main signal, and a divergence from price at highs and lows is its most valuable reading. A new price high with a lower oscillator high means the burst of money that lifted the first high did not repeat on the second.
Hypothetical example
An indicator breaks above its all-time high while the oscillator crosses below zero in the same week. The breakout is happening on slowing flow, a classic false-breakout pattern. It is not a sell order by itself, but it is a reason not to chase the breakout.
Where it errs and why
Two layers of derivation mean high sensitivity and many false signals in quiet markets, and it inherits its source's flaw with gaps. Its two short windows make it a tool for days, not weeks.
Read it with
It is not read alone. First classify the environment with the trend strength indicator. Then confirm with volume, which separates a backed move from an empty one. Then place it on the structural levels from the gamma map, since a signal at a dense wall carries more weight than one in open space.
