A worked example that explains the rule, not a stock price. The circle marks the first close beyond the level. The blue line is the target. The orange line is the invalidation. Prices are in the right-hand column, and sessions sit under the volume bar. Hollow green candles closed above their open, and filled red candles closed below it.

What it is

Highs and lows both rise, but the lows rise faster so the range contracts. A rise losing momentum: each wave is shorter than the last.

When the trigger starts and when it fails

Signal

A close below the lower leg.

Invalidation · Structural Invalidation

A close above the last high in the wedge.

Reading it stage by stage

  1. Apparent rise Highs and lows rise · it looks healthy to a casual reader.
  2. Squeeze The lows rise faster, so the range narrows and volume falls. That is the warning: read the width, not the direction.
  3. Break Below the lower leg · the target is the wedge's maximum height subtracted from the breakdown point.

Recognition rules

  • Two rising lines that converge · the lower one is steeper.
  • The range narrows as the pattern develops.
  • Volume falls during the rise · a clear warning.
  • Confirmation is a break below the lower side.

Measuring the target

The wedge's maximum height is subtracted from the breakdown point.

Where it fools you

  • The most dangerous thing about it is that it looks like a healthy rise. A casual reader sees higher highs and buys, while the shrinking range and drying volume say the opposite. Read the width, not the direction.

Where to find it on the platform

  • Technical terminal · drawing tools Members only
Open the daily timeframe for any symbol and draw the pattern yourself. Your drawing is saved per symbol in your browser, and the terminal does not name or detect the pattern.

We do not detect chart patterns with a numeric rule: telling them apart takes judgment on the chart. Candlestick patterns with a numeric rule are detected daily by the candlestick pattern scanner.
